iPhone 12: Latest News, release date, price, leaks

Table of Contents

The iPhone 12 is expected to hit the market very soon, and dozens of rumours about the upcoming 2020 iPhones are already pouring in. The iPhone 12 lineup is expected to be released in September 2020 but it can also extend towards the end of October. There are numerous reports that suggest a delay in launch, and perhaps Apple has also made a statement that due to the situation of Covid-19 pandemic, the phones may hit stores later than normal time.

There have been rumours that Apple will release as many as four new phones in 2020. The wait is worthwhile and we’re expecting some big upgrades. So, here we present a compilation of most notable rumour regarding the iPhone 12.

Operating System

They will come preloaded with iOS 14. iOS 14 is the latest version of its iOS operating system, introduced by Apple in June 2020 and all set for release.

iOS 14 is one of Apple’s biggest iOS updates to date. It introduces major new features along with Home screen design changes, updates for existing apps, Siri improvements, and many other tweaks that streamline the iOS interface. The iOS 14 brings a redesigned Home Screen that includes support for widgets for the first time.

Prospective Name

Witnessing the Apple’s naming scheme in 2018, we found it a bit confusing which went on as the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR. In the year 2019, it was much clearer and predictable with names like the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max. So, if the Apple continues to follow the same naming scheme as used for the 2019 iPhones, the 2020 iPhones can be expected to be named as the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Apple is introducing the smallest version in the iPhone 12 series, the iPhone 12 Mini this year.

Screen Size and Display

The “iPhone 12″ is rumoured to have two distinct models with a 5.4″, 6.7″, and 6.1” sizes. The 6.7-inch iPhone and one 6.1-inch model would be higher-end devices according to the rumours. They may include 3D triple-lens cameras. The 5.4 and 6.1-inch models with dual-lens cameras would be the lower-end iPhones. A more affordable price tag can also be expected.

As per the resources, the following are the screen sizes.

·        Phone 12 Mini with a 5.4-inch display

·        iPhone 12 with a 6.1-inch display

·        iPhone 12 Pro with a 6.1-inch display

·        iPhone 12 Pro Max with a 6.7-inch display

The 2020 iPhone 12 Mini with 5.4 inches will be the smallest iPhone Apple has released since the iPhone SE (4.7-inch). Moreover, the rumoured iPhone 12 Pro Max with 6.7-inch display will be the largest iPhone Apple has launched till date, beating the 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max. The 6.1-inch models will be similar in size to the existing iPhone 11.

Display technology

A lot of other changes and improvements have also been rumoured in the display. All the iPhones in 2020 are expected to be based on OLED display technology. A 120Hz “ProMotion” refresh rate might be included in some of the higher-end models.

Design

Reports suggest that the iPhone 12 lineups would be inspired by iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 phones with some elements of the iPad Pro 2020 mixed in. The iPhone 12 will also have a significant redesign with a flatter metal frame according to reports. It would be very different from the iPhone 11 range. The upcoming iPhone12 designs would resemble more to the frame of the iPhone 4 or the iPad Pro.

According to Jon Prosser, a reliable leaker, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini will have aluminium frames while the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will have stainless steel ones. He also leaked some information regarding the phone’s notch, suggesting that all four phones will have smaller notches than the iPhone 11 range.

The rear of all four phones is still expected to be made of glass. Some reports suggest that the iPhone 12 will still feature curved glass edges around the display. Some reports also suggest the edges be a bit more squared than the rounded ones on current models. Analysts have referenced 2.5D glass in his various reporting on the 2020 iPhone lineup.

Based on this reliable leaked information regarding the prospective models, designs and displays, leading companies like Swiss Armour has After all, Apple’s new devices aren’t indestructible although they might be less prone to cracks, scratches or breakage as past iPhones. Moreover, you might be carrying your iPhone in your pocket or purse, so a screen protector of a high-quality tempered glass is something that is highly recommended for any iPhone.

When it comes to quality, the Swiss Armour’s iPhone 12 screen protectors have been made from high-quality materials, whether it is the Asahi glass or the Toyo glue. The Asahi Glass used is, in fact, a product of the largest glass manufacturing company in the world. The screen guard material has also been rated with a 9H hardness ensuring a scratch-proof and safest display. The major highlight of this tempered glass screen protector for iPhone 12 is the exclusive PerfectAlign™ technology. The PerfectAlign™ technology ensures perfect centring and easy installation of the glass over the smartphone screen.

The expected colour range in the iPhone 12

As for the iPhone 12 colours, the colour navy blue is expected on its top-end models. Reports also consider that the colour Midnight-Green, first introduced in the iPhone 11 Pro may also be expected. However, there are also chances that the navy colour may replace the 2020 iPhones lineup.

Besides Midnight Green, the other colours we can expect include the Space Gray, Silver and Gold as seen in the previous iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max. However, there are no firm sources that suggest the return of these colours.

For the standard phone, we can expect a range of colours such as the Black, Green, Yellow, Purple, Red and White colours that are present in the iPhone 11.

Notable Features

One of the major expected features is that the iPhone 12 range will be water-resistance. The IP68 water and dust resistance rating found on the iPhone 11 range are likely to be maintained. This means that the phone will not be entirely waterproof although it can be submerged in the water.

Camera

Some big changes in the device camera are being expected in the 2020s iPhone lineup. Sources suggest that the iPhone 12 might have a 64MP main camera, which would be a huge upgrade as compared to the 12MP snapper on the previous few versions.

The phone might also feature multiple lenses camera to support night mode shooting and also an ultra-wide snapper could have a dedicated macro mode. The Smart HDR functionality feature for improved low-light performance may be expected in the iPhone 12 Pro.

Rumours also suggest the addition of a LiDAR scanner that can accurately judge distances. This feature can be seen in the iPad Pro 2020. This would help in improved augmented reality and Portrait mode. The system may also probably enable to cut down on the size of the notch on the front.

The LiDAR scanner is being planned to be included on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max (alongside three lenses). The basic two camera iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 might not feature the LiDAR scanner.

Memory and battery

iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini will come in 128GB and 256GB models while the Pro and Pro Max will supposedly come in both of those and 512GB.

The upcoming models surely have battery life limitations. Apple could wait until 2021 to add the feature to improve battery life. You can expect a 2,227mAh battery for iPhone 12. The iPhone 12 Max and iPhone 12 Pro may have a 2,775mAh battery and a 3,687mAh battery can be expected in iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Introducing 5G Feature

It’s rumoured that the flag iPhone in 2020 will be the first iPhone to feature 5G connectivity. There are also rumours that the 5G iPhone models will support both mmWave and sub-6GHz bands. However, it is not yet clear whether all iPhone 12 models will have super-fast mmWave support in all countries as the mmWave technology have not been implemented in some countries. This will allow the new devices to connect to 5G networks that are much faster than 4G LTE networks.

An LCP or Liquid Crystal Polymer antenna design can be expected in the Apple iPhone 12 2020. The LCP is a desirable material for antenna technology as it performs consistently across different temperatures with low loss. It is perfect for 5G technology. The LCP antennae design was first introduced in the iPhone X in 2017.

A14Chip

The new A14 chipset, manufactured by TSMC is supposedly an expected feature in the iPhone 12 models coming in 2020. These Apple-designed 5-nanometer A14 chip can make every interaction on the iPhone faster and smoother than before. It can also bring small gains in battery life to compensate for 5G, which uses additional battery.

iPhone 12 pricing

The pricing models for iPhone 12, Pro, and Pro Max are expected to be similar to that of iPhone 11, Pro, and Pro Max Models.

The prices may begin at $699 for the regular model while the Pro and Pro max models will be $999 and $1099. The pricing will also increase with increasing storage.

Here’s a brief of expected pricing models.

iPhone 12 Mini: Starting price ranges between $699 and $749

iPhone 12 : Starting price between $799 and $849

iPhone 12 Pro: Starting price between $1,049 and $1,099

iPhone 12 Pro Max: Starting price between $1,149 and $1,199

According to reports, it will cost Apple about $75 per unit for sub-6GHz 5G support, and up to $125 for millimetre wave 5G. However, Apple would plan to keep the prices low and may not pass on the cost increases to the consumer sale price of the iPhone 12. This will be compensated with cost savings elsewhere on the phone.

For instance, Apple has decided to cost cuts on internal parts without any noticeable effect on user experience. The battery printed circuit board is another area where Apple is downgrading its specifications.

Apple also appears to cut down cost with the bundled accessories. Various reports suggest that Apple will ship the iPhone 12 without a charger in the box. The iPhone 12 lineup is also expected to exclude the accessories like wired EarPods or a power brick in the box.

Summary

So there were some of the rumoured news about iPhone 12 from features to design and the model. Three different display sized, OLED display, Triple-lens 3D camera, A14 chip for faster and improved efficiency, the first-ever 5G connectivity and other features are worth the wait.

Moreover, if the prices are kept relatively stable with 5G feature, without compromising quality the Apple iPhone 12 lineups may be able to compete in the smartphone market amidst weaker macroeconomic trends as a result of the pandemic.
